Netanyahu: Gilad Shalit Home Soon

Israel and the Hamas government finally reached agreement on the release of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldiers who became prisoners of Hamas during the last five years. The agreement stated Sergeant Shalit in exchange 1027 Palestinian prisoners.

A vote in the Israeli cabinet, the cabinet supports the exchange of the members 26 and three other votes against.

Freedom of Shalit was announced by the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu in a television broadcast. "We've completed the serious negotiations with Hamas for the release of Gilat Shalit. He would come home within a few days," Netanyahu said on Tuesday (10/11/2011).

Shalit who was captured in a 19-year-old cross-border raid in 2006. Various efforts to negotiate for his release failed. Military operation to release Shalit did not work.

"We will return Gilad in good health to the family and all Israel. Negotiations very difficult. We have to take difficult decisions, but that is true. With all the changes that occur in the Middle East, we do not know if there is a better deal or allow," Netanyahu said.

Talks on Shalit's release mediated by Egypt. The agreement was taken on Thursday (06/10/2011) and signed officially by Israel and the Palestinians on Tuesday (11/10/2011).
In a televised speech Hamas, Al-Quds, Hamas leader in exile, Khaled Meshaal, said Israel would release 1027 Palestinian prisoners, including women.

Shortly after Meshaal's speech, Al-Aqsa television which also showed the Hamas-run atmosphere of celebration agreement in Gaza.

Netanyahu's spokesman, Mark Regev, said, in the first stage, 450 prisoners would be released. One hundred and ten of them were returned to the West Bank, while 40 others will be out of the country. For the second stage, 550 prisoners scheduled to be released two months later. Regev said the Palestinian lawmaker, Marwan Barghouti, excluding those exempted.

Netanyahu said he had told Shalit's parents, Noam and Aviva Shalit. "I told them that I held my promise and bring home the kids," Netanyahu said before the cabinet.

From Colombia, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the deal. "We've been waiting for this deal. We hope that all Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli prison," said Abbas WAFA news agency reported.
